it's a 3 hour drive for me to take a look at it for you. Keep it in mind should you want to pursue it. For a nut I'll make the drive......

Well people, as of tomorrow evening I will officially be busless... The Miss is going to live in Edmonton, the good news is now I have to find a replacement (see what I did there?). I'm keeping my eyes open still but don't want to make any moves until the new year. Thanks all for your support, reading back I know I've seemed kind of schizo but I'm still on track.

I NEED HELP! I really think I want to do this, need opinions (other than "just do it"). Please take a look and let me know if you see anything out of place. vintagebus.com/61dc/[/img] [/img]

DO IT! Ok, it needs the rear cargo floor replaced and on a DC that is a painful and slow process. There is very little access, there's lots of little things in the way (gas tank area, the dividers etc). On a regular bus it is super easy. Maybe it just needs patches, but those replaced rockers mean the top hats, reinf. could be bad, you never know (I'm a pessimist when it comes to rust!). Early DC = big plus! Looks like it has nose rust, corner rust, replaced rockers, and it has a hack, but that hack is really really REALLY cool And the price is pretty dece. $7K x 1.23 + 5% + 1500 shipping = $10500 Too bad it doesn't come with any of the cool stuff, but maybe he will toss them in?? So, DO IT! 10 G's for an honest early DC that is running and driving seems decent.

Walkthrough Double Cab. Now that would be unique. Does it come with the centerlines too? There are 114 pictures of it in the gallery too. but I'm sure you knew that....

Even if it did come with the centerlines I'm not sure that's the way I would want to go. I have been brought back down to earth once again (Keith I thank you and my wife thanks you!) I really need to wait until next year before making any more purchases. As has been brought to my attention there's probably a reason why this is still for sale and with the way things are going maybe an even better option will come up, this is something I want to be a keeper so I need to learn from past mistakes and do it right the first time. So for the next couple months I'm going to focus on the little black car and the little red car and try and stay away from the Samba classifieds! Even though I am currently without bus there is still time.

I know it's not technically "next year" yet but I thought I would bring this back up. Even though I wasn't supposed to be looking, there was a viewing of a somewhat local '61 DC a few weeks ago. Unfortunately the poor truck needs alot more work than I would ever be able to take on (and still be married anyway...) plus the owner wants top Samba dollar for it. Seriously everytime I see the pictures it makes me cringe. Anyway on to the present. Financially we're not quite as good as I was imagining and I still have an engine with an unknown price tag to pay for soon. On top of all that we found out a couple weeks ago that momma's pregnant (oops). Besides the extra expense over a regular bus now I'm worried about a double not having enough room for five of us (assuming there's only one TBA...). While I'm not going to change the title of the thread just yet I'm keeping my eyes open for a nice standard as well, just in case. This coming year is going to be a busy one either way.

Congrats Karmann and just to carify..... YOU DON'T want a 15 window... That's MY title and my quest. There are lots to choose from recently as far as Standards go and I can see your dilemma when it comes to seating. Especially if you have one still in a booster. Those things take up a lot of room.

You definitley don't need to worry about me crowding the 15-window buyers market.
My boys are almost 2 (car seat) and 3 1/2 years old (booster) and while I've heard that three car seats will fit in a DC it just seems a bit cramped. I really, and I mean really want a truck, but it's looking more and more like a bus bus will be the way to go. Maybe once Duffy here in Calgary pulls his truck from hibernation I'll take a better look and see what's up.

Shane if you wanted a splitty Kombi I know of a very good daily driver worthy 1957 (October 1956) dove blue kombi. has been registered as a 1959 since 1959 one owner original Calgary bus.... if you want I can get you in touch with the current owner (he's not real big into vw's but he didn't want to see this one to hit the states so he bought it and is getting me to sell it for him locally)
p.s. its Brant if you haven't figured that one out.

Hey Brant! Is this the one that is/was at Bushmaster 5 or 6 weeks ago? Still has 36hp, running and driving?

yep thats the one. Tom who owns bushmaster bought the bus from the original owner. original 36 horse still running and driving. new tires brakes and all the good stuff on all 4 corners... it needs one outrigger but thats easy stuff. Will pass insurance inspection with no problem. has a book of history with it as well. all the original keys every thing. just needs a set of original tail lights and a cargo door outer handle.
Let me know if you want to have a good look at it.

I did stop for a quick look, here's my honest impression. It looks amazing, I'm a total sucker for the pinstripe, plus it's really solid. Then I saw the jackpoint (not a real big deal as you mentioned), signs of bondo on the passenger side outer rocker, incorrect rear bumper, crazy ass taillights and absolutely no interior from the front seat back.
Within 30 seconds I knew it wasn't the bus for me. For one I would feel really bad about making any sort of modifications (which I would have to do to make it usable for my circumstances), it just seems too rare and original(?) a piece. Oh and then there was the $10k US asking price. Add another $5000 to fix what is wrong and find rear seats/panels and it's well into solid DC territory.

Very true. I did manage to get a set of correct tails for it for tom (he doesnt know it yet haha. The rocker has had a crappy skim coat at one point well in the past but it was done at a dealer as it is correct dove blue paint. and ya it would be kind of a shame to drop it a bit and make a sick cruiser. damn cool though.
Brant.
