The momentous event finally happened last night, my Kombi finally made it home! I'm going to start a web page and link it to my Ghia site when I can get to it. In the mean-time this is what I have found out about my new little gem. Thanks to Darryl (dwill49965) on The Samba for figuring out the m-codes for me. My plate reads this way... 11 1 11 008 013 043 SH 2310 474735 8079175 It means this... 11 1 - date code - 11 Jan (1968) 11 - eng/trans code - type 1 engine, 4 speed manual trans 008 - without battery 013 - Middle three person bench seat, rear three person bench seat, and interior trim in passenger compt. 043 - no m-code listed SH - destination code - Switzerland, Birfeld 2310 - Kombi, LHD, sliding door right, Standard version 4747 - exterior paint code - Neptune Blue 35 - interior code - dark blue, leatherette 8079175 is the chassis number I'm not sure why I'm so excited that I have a Swiss bus, but I am. A fair bit of the Neptune Blue can still be seen, I'm going to try and strip the green paint off of the dash/interior to bring it back (they sprayed some things but not all, and it doesn't look like they sanded so it should come off pretty easy). This weekend I'm stripping the beam down (spindles will be at C1 Monday morning so they can be sent off to become "dropped") and a little cleanup. I hope to have it back on the road for next spring. Overall the body is pretty good, it needs a bunch of patch panels on the floor, the drivers side rocker and dogleg are not so good but everything else is not bad at all (frame is really solid). My plan is to go through the brakes and suspension, some paint on the bumper(s) and wheels and run it that way for awhile. One day I'd like to finish up the body and get it back to Neptune Blue, I guess we'll see what happens. Shane

Congrats Shane! Good lineage on the new bus. Can you tell me if the dash is padded or metal?? I always wanted a Euro metal dash bay.

It does have a dash pad, but it doesn't cover all the way up to the windshield, just the edge where you'll crack your skull I guess. It's probably standard but I'll get some pictures for you. It's funny how I went into this just wanting a cool family hauler (it's just a baywindow right? not to mention I've already got a restoration project with the Ghia) now I'm finding all these really interesting things, and the more I learn about it's history the more I have the urge to make it proper again. Do you know how hard it's going to be to find euro headlights and taillights? Neither do I, but I think I'm going to find out ;D. Shane

Is it metal below the dash pad?? BTW, karma for you for naming it the Swiss Miss!
Euro lights aren't hard to find on the Samba and the prices aren't bad.

BTW, karma for you for naming it the Swiss Miss! Thanks Chris! I had another name picked out, but I couldn't help myself. I guess I'll have to get on The Samba classifieds and start hunting for deals! Shane

Cool I can't wait to see this bus on the road. ;D You can't go wrong with an early bay, they where one of the best vehicles VW ever made. Keep us posted on you progress.

Is it metal below the dash pad?? Yes metal below the dash pad. The pad itself only covers the top edge of the dash (only a few inches deep). I took a bunch of pictures this morning, I'll get around to posting them this weekend hopefully. If you're still after one when the time comes to sell (not soon I hope) I'll make sure you'll be the first to know. That is unless you wanted to arrange a Kombi for Kombi trade . j/k Shane

Hey Shane, the link isn't working for me. I'll see if I can find the page and re-link it.

Nice bus!!! Here's the link: www.members.shaw.ca/karmann57/Vreni's%20Page.htm You have to highlight the whole line and copy and paste it in your browser to get it to work????wierd. Love the Euro dash. Looks like the driver's door is a '69 or later. The built in lock mechanism in the interior handle is the give away. I believe that '68 had 1 year only doors. I have a '68 handle and lock set for you if you can find a door.....but, I think, if you drill for the lock post at the top of the door, you could make it look and function correctly. Chris

Chris I'm not sure why the link didn't work either, I tried to fix it a few times on the CVD forums but couldn't get it. You know, I think I'm going to be tired of all this "one-year-only" stuff by the time this is over . I'll take the door panels off and confirm that retrofitting the '68 mechanism will work and I'll let you know. Any chance you would have the correct door pull as well? Shane

I have the full mechanism. It includes interior pull, lock pull, and exterior handle. I'm pretty sure it will all fit. I'll take a look at my doors and see what it takes. As far as 1 year only gets....you'll have to get used to it with buses. VW liked to change it up alot. '68 isn't too bad. Things like brake fluid resevoir, handles, flasher relays, ec. have all been overcome some way or another by other people. The parts are still relatively easy to find or reproduce. Remember, it could be a barndoor and the tailights alone would be more than you paid for your whole bus. Chris

I know I shouldn't complain too much, it's just that my "cheap project" keeps getting more expensive as I now feel the need to make everything "correct" . Warming up to finish removing the spindles this afternoon I decided to remove a little repaint off the dash. I got a little of the chemical I was using on the door panel, and found that the original blue door panels have been painted over! I knew someone had painted the headliner, but I wasn't sure about the panels. I've also fixed the link to the web page, I keep using "publish" instead of "members" but there was something about the apostrophe in the title that was buggering things up. Shane
