Hey Keith, I think you should be able to do the same in Calgary. My tire guy needs to eat too, so I'm pretty sure I paid the normal price. I didn't ask him for any favours, he earn's our business by honesty(and I can walk from there to work in 2 minutes ). On the wiper motor, I sure wouldn't mind a spare. Got anything on your wish list? Good to know. Wiper motor is yours. Only thing I need right now that is "scarce" is the inside pressing of the right rear corner on a pre 64 bus. Thats the pressing that has the engine lid prop mount and the triangular framing that connects the rear corner to the frame. It pretty much needs to come from a parts bus. The entire corner, inside pressings, battery tray and fender skirt were trashed in Daisy, so I need to scare up that part before metal work deadline at end of september. I need a 63 1 ton transaxle too, if you happen to know of one.

Thanks Keith,
I'll make a couple inquiries for you.
Best regards, Darren

Yes great thread!! I'm trying to figure out what tires to get for my 57 bus, as it also needs an OOP inspection. On the Kumho tires, Darren what is the ply rating on them? I'm not to familiar with what an "S" load range means??? I know that B is 4 ply and C is 6 ply, but S? Cheers

Well Jay, From what I've seen, there is no available C or D rated radial tire that has the appropriate sidewall height(27-27.1") and original biasply load rating for a 15" rim. I don't think you'll need one for the OOP, nor will you need to put on bias-plys. My single cab was passed with 185/75R14's that I found to be kinda mushy with a load of bricks on the back. The bus manuals( www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/july57bus/July_1957_Bus_Owners_Manual.pdf) indicate that the max load rating for the rear axle on early busses was 1000 kg, and fronts were 950 kg. My Kuhmos are rated to 1609 lbs each (730 kg) which together should hold 1,460 kg(evenly balanced). Even after being derated(/1.1 as below), the pair should still handle 1,327 kg. I believe that this gives ample room for off centre weight distribution. The current repro firestone biasply 6.40-15's have a weight rating of 540 kg each. The pair can only handle 1,080 kg total. Based on the way that my singlecab drives and corners now, I would say that the Kuhmo KL78 205/75R15 is a great tire. I can't really comment on the bias-ply ride, but was told to stay away from them. P-Metric or hard metric tires on Light Trucks When a P-metric or metric tire is installed on a light truck (SUV, pickup, minivan), the load capacity of the tire is reduced by a factor of 1.10 as prescribed by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS). For example, 305/50R20 has a maximum load capacity of 3086 lbs. If this tire is fitted to a light truck, then the actual allowable load capacity for the tire is 2805 lbs. (3086 lbs. divided by 1.1). If you replace the original tires with the exact same type (P-metric, hard metric, LT-metric, or flotation), size designations, and ply as the tires that were originally installed, just follow the vehicle’s tire information placard for proper inflation pressures. If, however, you apply a ‘Plus zero’ or plus-1, etc., fitment to a light truck, you must discount the replacement tire’s load by the 1.10 factor and ensure that the replacement tire has sufficient load capacity by inflation to support the load of the originally installed tires. This load reduction factor is prescribed by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) and is based on the expectation that passenger type tires (P-metric) may experience more severe loading and usage conditions when applied to light trucks.

Thanks for the info Darren!! I do like the Kuhmo KL78 205/75R15, and I am leaning towards them. The 27.1 over all diameter is important to me as I am running the stock 36hp engine in it for now.
But then a guy posted these tires on the Samba.

Thanks Jay, It does look like a good tall relatively slim tire at a super high load rating(I think it is D-rated). The tread appears to be slightly less siped than mine and may not be mud and snow rated(I wanted this for mine as I occasionally have to drive through muck and snow out at the farm). In any case, buseric was able to get them in/into Ontario somehow so they must be available locally too. With the tighter clearance due to the lower nonlip wheel well in the back, it may be easier to slip the 195 through without having to wiggle or deflate it. Don't know if the 205 would be a problem or not. It has a 8" section width versus the 7.5" from the 195R15C from Nexen. Here's a few more pics with better resolution of my setup. I'm very happy with the stance.

Hey Jay,
Did you send buseric a PM to ask where he got them? I was thinking of doing the same just for info to add to the thread.

Darn, I wish I'd have seen those Nexens last week. i got my neighbor (who works at Fountain Tire) to bring in those Kumho's for me. Got them mounted and balanced last week although I won't actually drive on them till spring. Daisy has unlipped fenders and a 2 litre, so a little taller and a little slimmer would have been better. II'd rather have those Nexens

Ok, so here is the update!! I have spent days calling and searching, trying to find a place Where I can get these Nexen tires. It looks like the only place to get these tires in Canada is through a website called tire-easy.ca. These tires are made for vehicles made in Korea. I e-mailed buseric from the Samba to see where he got his(since he lives in Ontario) this is what he had to say: "Hi I got mine for a reasonable price of $630 CDN shipped from tires-easy.ca They are actually out of the states, but everything is done in canadian funds. Warning: I bought online with my credit card and my card was loaded with online fraudulent charges soon after. My bank corrected everything, but I suspect it was through this transaction. They accept paypal and that would be the way to go if possible." So I tried ordering them tonight and guess what, no option to use Pay Pal!!! Not to sure what to do now, order them and risk it or go with Kumhos? Here is the tire-easy.ca link ssl.delti.com/cgi-bin/rshop.pl?dsco=150&Cookie=shopbot&details=Ordern&typ=R-182696&ranzahl=4&nichtweiter=1

Jay Go to the bank and buy a fixed amount credit card for the price of the tires and shipping. That way the card is exhausted once you make the purchase.
You want to buy my Kumho's? I'd rather have the Nexens.
With shipping and GST, these came out to about $590 to get them to me. I wonder if they ship with the Brown Devil and if there would be those hated brokerage charges?

Jay Go to the bank and buy a fixed amount credit card for the price of the tires and shipping. That way the card is exhausted once you make the purchase. That is a great idea!!! I may have to look into this as a option!!! I emailed Tire-Easy.ca and they told me that I can pay with Pay Pal. They told me I have the option to use Pay Pal in step 4. But in step 3 they ask for your Credit Card info and you can't move forward to step 4 with out giving your info. So I emailed back again and as of yet have not received a reply!! want to buy my Kumho's? I'd rather have the Nexens. I really want the Nexens too
