How to Change the Brake Pedal Return Spring on a Split Bus When one first glances under the front of the bus after the brake pedal has refused to get up off the floor, one can be a little intimidated by the corroded parts and the broken spring. It may appear that there is substantial iron that needs to be removed to get at the elusive little spring, but it really is not near as bad as it looks. It is actually a fairly simple operation. Initially, unbolt the brake pedal portion that is visible above the floor from the lever that is immediately below the floor. Now pull the cotter pin from the pin that attaches the lever to the master cylinder push rod. Be sure the push rod is free of the lever. Remove that snap ring and the washer and the lever will slide off of the pivot shaft. Now, you can pull off the broken spring and slide on the new one. It is fairly easy to preload the tension on the new spring before the lever slides onto the pivot shaft. Be sure to clean any corrosion off of the lever and the shaft and give the shaft a dose of wheel bearing grease before re-installing. Attach the lever to the push rod, bolt it back onto the brake pedal and your pedal will once again return.
