Question for the experts.... I'm starting to collect the parts to put my engine together. I'm planning on a 90.5 X 78 engine. The question I have is how much clearancing does a stock case new to clear a 78 mm crank. A stroked case is over a hundred bucks more but if I don't need it why spend the extra dough. Anybody put a 78m crank in a stock case before?

The biggest factor on how much you will have to remove from the inside is the type of rod you are using. VW rods are pretty big on the crank end and will require more room. If you go with a chevy rod H beam like CB's, then they are radiused pretty good to give you room. The way I look at it is $100 is cheap insurnace to make sure everything has enough room to move. Plus if you ever want to go bigger with it it's just a matter of dropping in a different crank. You will still need to double check everything of course.

I have a stock case and a stroker if you want to see what the diff is inside. If you have the 78mm crank already you could drop it in and see where the clearancing needs to be done.

I'm certainly no expert...but in my case I'm using the 76mm Stroker Crank and Stock Rods.
I haven't test fit anything to see IF I need to clearance things..I'm hoping not. Most of the information I gathered indicated that a 76mm Crank did not require any Case modifications...that's why I went with it. But, as Jim Martin points out... DON'T TRUST ANYTHING UNLESS YOU'VE SEEN IT FOR YOURSELF.
So, if I need to take the Dremel to my case...it'll be documented for everyone to see.
As for my Advice... I'd recommend that the extra $100 is worth it. Then, as they say, you can go bigger with no worries.
