I have the 1970 bay window in need of rebuilding, I haven't torn apart the motor yet to find the problem so if its minorI'll just fix it but if I need to do more then I think I want more power. If I could even find one, how hard is it to swap in a 2L or 1.8L into my bus? different tranny? are there any other possible swaps for a guy who doesn't really have the greatest knowledge of automotives. yet. Thanks all you nuts,
Tony

Others may have a better idea but here is what I would keep in mind.
It's basically a Type 1 engine so you can build what you want but stroker = torque which is better in a bus.
That being said if you are doing a full rebuild try and start with a Type 2 block, it will have the proper mounts for the rear "moustache bar" support, if you use a more common Type 1 block you will have to get an adapter to mount it and some have had problems with oil leaks because of it.

I think you may be wondering about the bus (Type 4) 1.8 or 2.0 litre engines. These are "pancake" engines and yours takes an "upright". The Type 4 engines were stock on buses from 1972 onward. They are completely different animals and will not fit in your bus without cutting up your engine compartment. Your best bet is to rebuild your existing engine. If you want more balls in an engine, there are plenty of performance upgrades available for the Type 1 engine. Spend a couple hours perusing the "Engines and Performance" forum on the Samba and that will give you an idea of what is available.
