Well this Saturday I have plans to try and get a 1600 DP in a '65 Westy fired up for a friend after sitting 22 years. The engine was rebuilt shortly before it was parked all those years ago. Super clean under the valve covers, 3 stuck valves. The valves have been soaking constantly in penetrating oil for a few weeks now, oil in the cylinders too. LOTS. No rust inside the engine anywhere that can be seen & very minimal moisture in the oil. I'm sure the valves will unstick easily enough. The bottom end turns over nicely. Does anyone have any good advice, other than another carb, fuel pump, fuel lines, filter, spark plugs & an oil change? This isn't the 1st long sitting, partially seized engine I have fired up. But the 1st VW one. I plan to replace the valve spring for him if it runs too.
I know it would just be easier to pull it & tear it down, but I'm looking at this as sort of a challenge!

Sounds like you've got it covered Greg. The only problem I've had with starting an old engine is stuck rings. If you've had it soaking that should help. I guess, once it's running, you could always try pouring a little diesel through the carb to burn out all the sludge. Marvel Mystery Oil works well too. Good luck and keep us informed.

I used to use Marvel, but I can't find it anymore. Neither can Peter. When (if ) it runs I am going to burn off a can of GM combustion chamber cleaner, that should take care of any old carbon. Then a can of engine oil flush, change the oil & add a can of GM EOS to the oil. Geee, can't tell I work for GM can you? ;D I'll keep everyone updated on the progress, this should be fun! -Greg

GM EOS is an excellent product! I'm using it in all the new engines we have. Nothing wrong with working for GM as long as your heart is with VW.... Good luck with the fire up!! Chris

Crank it over without plugs, and even without the rockers to reprime/build oil pressure. Other than that sounds like you have a handle on it.

Well we tried to get those last 2 exhaust valves unstuck, #2 & #4 with no luck. Nothing would work. Heat, penatrating oil, hammers, pry bars. Nothing would unstick those last 2 valves. We even took of the valves springs & tried to turn them with vice grips, I figured why not at this point. Nothing. Oh well. At that point we just decided to pull the engine out. Pete has another one that we can put in there anyway. Well we tried.
