Spice, The first pic looks like the aluminum fins of the heater box?? I can't really tell. As far as the seal goes. I believe you're looking for the main seal. This should be the right one: www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D029%2D105%2D245%2DBSI don't have a lot of type 4 experience so maybe someone else can give you some more answers. Chris

Chris is correct about the fins in the heater box. They are in there to dissapate the heat off the pipe, and then it gets transfered to the interior when heat is needed.

The hole should have an tin oval tube that slides into it. This tube protrudes up through the engine tin into the engine bay where a cardboard hose connects to it. This hose then connects to your squirrel cage fan mounted above your engine. In my opinion don't worry about hooking it up cause over the years 99% of those heater boxes are rusted and leaking, and all you would be doing is gassing yourself out of your bus, and causing a very unsafe driving environment.

is this is the tube you mean?? so its not worth getting it going ?? I'm not driving it this winter anyway so I don't need heat! or smog. I'm glad you said something I have a 3 1/2 yrold girl and the wife is about 4 weeks away from giving us #2 and we will be using it this spring and summer !! I hope you guy's don't mind me asking dumb questions but I would rather know as much as I can about my bus for "when"its sitting at the side of the road in need of some repair, and boy I have forgotten alot about vw air cooled motors!! when I had my ghia I only had it for 3yrs after the resto was done on it (I did very little on it I had lots of good friends and family that helped) but I was only 16 at the time and did not learn a hole lot at the time, but that car was great nothing ever went wrong with it the hole time I drove it. After doing that project I found myself loving water cooled vw's and I learned alot about re-building motors that was when I was 18-20ish. since I was 16 I have also been into vintage scooters too (air cooled,2stroke , manual shift ) making a scooter do 130km is lots of fun and I can easily work my way around a scooter motor. as I tell my non-scooter-vw friends driving a scooter or a vw is not so much as the love in driving it , it is the adventure and seeing if you can actually make it to the destination and back without breaking down !! Im a hands on type of learning but I do read as much as I can and Im glad I saved all my air cooled books and mags to refresh my mind but I'm sure glad you guy's started this web page it has and will be a great tool for me. THANKS Chris & rareair cheers SPICE

That looks like it. Just plug the hole where that pipe used to stick through the engine bay to keep unwanted heat from being pulled up through there. Don't worry about asking questions... no one knows everything, and it's good to ask so ideas get bounced around. ;D

OK I have looked in the engine bay of the bus and while it was being stored someone took my blower fan what I was wondering is does this fan have anything to do with actual cooling the engine???

OK, stepping out of my element again. I believe the blower you are referring to is "the bilge pump blower". It functions as an auxiliary blower for heat only when the engine is at low RPM.(ie. idle) Therefore, it does not effect cooling.
However, we all know how nice it is to have a little heat even just for the cool evenings in spring and fall. I would try to find one and get it running.
Hopefully Trevor can step in and confirm this.
Chris

ya the bilge pump blower was what I was referring too I live in Ontario we welcome the cool nights and mornings living around these lakes we get real high humidity as well I ride scooters too I know I need to wear 5 layers of clothing and as the temp rises I take off layers!! my main concern is getting the bus rolling on its own power and not having it over heat??
cheers Chris

Don't worry, it won't effect engine cooling.
