OK, here's a question for the true vintage bus perverts out there. What year did VW switch from fat base mirror arms to the washer style skinny bases?? I'm thinking it was '58. Can anyone confirm this??
I'm reproing mirror arms with the correct bend, diameter, and thread and I'd like to add fat base arms to the list for early buses.
Thanks NUTS!!

I think it was 59. I will check "the flap" this weekend, and see what it has.

I thought fat base was up to the end of 58 model year or end of pressed bumpers or something like that. They are the same for right and left though.

If by flat base you mean the metal mirror arm stem tapers at the bottom to form a thicker stem to rest on the top of the door hinge..... the '61 has these.

Scott, the tapered style arms are later. The fat arms are about 6 mm tall by 20 mm wide at the base. Basically, it's a thick turned washer. I think Keith has it correct about the year change. I'll have pics and prices soon. Oh! and Trevor...what's "the flap" ? Chris

Trevor, I assumed that Greg had picked it up already. Once again, I was confused.

Nope, it's still here. I think Searail is dragging their feet on this one. I expect it to head out sometime next month.

I took a look at the sales flap, and it has the later mirror arms/bases. BTW, it was produced on July 2 1959.
