calling all nut knowledge gurus
When did VW change to the bigger rear axel nuts? What size are they for;
barndoor? early split? late split? bay window and later? beetle? (early...late ...super?)

Well I only know the answer to the first part of your question and that is 1963. As for the rest, one of these true NUTS nerds probably knows!

1963 was the first year for the big nut transaxle. Big nut being 46mm and small nut being 36mm. Not all 63's got the big nut though. In 63, there was the option for the one ton running gear. With this option, the bus came with late front spindles and brakes, but still had 22mm link pins. The rear came with big nut transaxles, but also had some peculiar 63 only parts to them, like brake drums and axle shafts. For the 64 model year, all buses were rated for one ton of cargo capacity and had big nut transaxles, late front brakes, spindles and 20mm link pins.
The big nut transaxles will bolt right into any May 59 bus and later (tunnel trans). They can be made to fit into pre May 59 buses (split case) with a transaxle mount change. I don't know what would be required to make them fit a barndoor.

Barndoor transaxles mount in a different way. The spring plates are closer together, so the reduction box does not actually mount to the spring plate like it does on a post 55' The axle tubes have a flange on them that the spring plate bolts to. The actual spring plate looks almost identical to a beetle one, with a big cut out in the end of it for the axle tube to pass through. This makes it super easy to bolt a type 1 trans into a BD. BDs also use lever shocks in the rear, so there is no mounting point for a telescoping (regular) type shock. All of this just leads to the many reasons you should just lower your BD.... All BD transaxles are small nut. Beetle Transaxles are all small nut too.
