I finally got around to checking on the engine number in the bus. It is a 1500cc single-port, 1968-69, but it was originally intended for a Beetle/Ghia.
My question is this, what differences if any were there between a Type 1 Beetle engine and a Type 1 Bus engine? Basically I'm worried about over-stressing the little bugger, if there are any Bus-specific items it should have I want to make sure they are on it. When budget allows I would like to add dual carbs and maybe update the distributor (SVDA).
Thanks.

They are basically the same thing. I wouldn't worry about having a beetle engine in there at all. Especially if your gonna give it a bit more power with the addition of dual carbs and such.

Like Sir RareAir says, apart from a couple small differences, the bus and Beetle engines were pretty much identical up to 1972 model year.
