I am considering IRS for my next split bus project (I am not even sure what that bus is yet!) I like the idea of highway gearing and stock height and the ability to lower it with the same transaxle set up. Can someone who has done this give me quick rundown on what all is involved? Initially I need to know a couple things like: Is a Beetle or Bus IRS used? Are there "bolt in" kits available or is cutting and welding mandatory? How difficult is this miracle to accomplish? I would consider myself somewhere between an accomplished novice and a retard intermediate in the wrenching department.
Any and all input would be appreciated

I did this conversion many years ago Keith. It's not that hard if you have the proper tools, like a protractor, welder etc. The note that BB makes on the CV joints binding is a very good one. If you end up going real low on the rear you may encounter this. I ended up putting some stitch welds onto the IRS pivot mounts just for safety sake. They say that you can bolt them around the torsion tube, and leave them, but I felt that wasn't enough.

I think wagon west has a kit too looks like a bolt on I think I'm going to try it as I'm scrapping my first bug I ever owned (72 super) and using the Irs set up from it as I know it was a awesome tranny. BTW Paul how is that swing axle I gave you.. will it work for you?
