I have all 5 of the date matched BD rims for my 53 SC...how 'bout you Ken? Seriously though, have you tried the Samba or the BDM site? I think the colour specific part may be a stretch though.

Yeah mine came with a nice set of 5 date matched rivited 16's..... The date stamp is actually on the inside of the hub, so you could only see the date with the tire removed. But, this might have only been on the early BD's like you and I have Trev, not one of those"late model" BD's like John is talking about..... ;D

Mine are actually in the hub. (stamped 3/53) Seeing as yours is a Feb 53, mine is a March 53, and John's is an April 53, they must have changed the stamping sometime between Feb and March me thinks.

Curiously enough, my bus was built in January of 54, but all four of the rims are dated 4/53 I guess they sat on the shelf in the factory for quite a while before being used. I had a date matched set of five 53 rivited 16" rims, but I sold them to Scott "kintail", I did not have a Barndoor at the time, and the wheels were original to his 53 rear hatch kombi. ...It's a great story actually... About three years ago, the two 53s were going up for sale in an estate auction. Scott ended up with the 53 rear hatch home brew camper, and Kendal ended up with the deluxe. The deluxe was sold with six 16" rims (not date matched), and the kombi just had 15" beetle wheels. The following spring I stopped by the house where the busses previously lived, and found that the house was being gutted for renovation. I nosed around, and befriended the new owners with some friendly chit-chat, and then slipped in the asking "say, you didn't happend to find any VW stuff did you?" Sure enough they had a stack of three 16" rims in the garage, and a garbage bag full of old VW brochures! Thy were more than happy to trade some fresh coffee and doughnuts for the "junk" they were going to throw out anyway ;D The hunt for the fourth rim brought me to a local stuff collector, who had bought a couple of pallets of parts from the same auction. He was more than happy to sell me the 4th rim, as long as I also took the stack of other tires and rims he had. To get rim # five, I called Kendel with the deluxe, and told him that I had some of the date matched rims for his bus. He agreed to giving me the last rim in exchange ... we sorted through all 10 rims and both ended up with matched sets ;D In total, I think it cost me $60, some doughnuts and coffee, and a bunch of running around. Unfortunately, I am not likely to repeat that performance to complete this set

Sounds great! It is for the spare anyway, so I'll use it untill I can find the right one. (not like that is ever going to happen )I have a brother in Calgary who can likely help get it seeing as I'm in Winnipeg. I'll also be visiting around Easter so we should be able to work something out. Let me know what you want, and I'll work something out. jgollub@mts.net Thanks! John.
