What is everyone using to remove the drive pinion when tearing down a motor. The manual says a VW tool 228a but do you use. This look like a homemade version of the tool. Dave

I just had to do that job the other day. I found a long hex key that fit in the hole on the gear, put a little sideways pressure to grab and lift it out. Some guys just use a length of dowel to push in and do the same. If you are splitting the case , don't worry about getting it out beforehand. It will be laying within easy reach when the case is apart.

Splitting the case is the next step. Thanks Mark.

On the rare occasion that I had to take one out with the case assembled I have just used a pencil. Whittled down slightly, then hammered into the drive where the spring goes. Rock the crank slightly & pull up with a twisting motion, hasn't failed me yet! But the correct tool sure would be nice......

Well this one wasn't going to come out with the tool. Once I split the case I had to push and tap from the back side to get it out. The pic I posted above looks like a home made job. Gonna keep that in mind the next time some machine shop needs some safety training. Bartering is always good business
