Well folks, "Betty" the Bus is getting lonely in the garage and needs some company. I'm looking for a split Kombi/Standard to care for and preserve while making sure it gets the excercise it needs.
Not picky on year (I do love the bullets though) or afraid of a bit of hard work. Just looking for something that can hang out and roll with the 67 and keep me out of trouble. Not looking to lowball or be greasy - just want an honest bus for a fair price.
If anyone has any leads or a treasure they're willing to part with, please drop me a line. If anyone just wants to chat VeeDubs in general or hook up for a cruise on one of the few nice days we have left, just let me know. "Betty" and the family likes crusing.
Matt

He says he needs to sell this week. Offer him $1K max and we'll grab a trailer and go get it Low tail lights and crescent hatch -looks like a 61 Kombi, but it has a pressed front bumper - good trading fodder. Sealing Wax Red (if it really is) is a great colour for Kombi's What do you think Trevor?

That actually looks like a decent project. Let's just go get it, if Matt decides he doesn't want it I'll take it. ;D

It's definitely a saveable bus that has its pros and cons as most of them do. It's not the right one for my situation right now though. I have lots of pics so if anyone wants to review them before contacting the seller, just PM me with your e-mail address. If someone scores it, I'd be up for a roadie to lend a hand ;D.
In the mean time, I'll keep hunting for the right one. I need to remember the saying "patience young grasshopper".

I think Keith is spot on for price on that one. If this one isn't right, I know of a 66 Kombi. OG velvet green paint with signwriting (the writing has been lacquer primed over, but should be easy to remove). Doesn't run and has a seized brake drum, but looks real complete.

The 66 sounds interesting. What's the scoop?

I actually JUST got home from picking it up. It was originally a drycleaning delivery bus that has spent all it's life in Swift Current until this weekend. It still has the orig. sign writing under where they tried to cover it. I took it through the car wash and managed to scrub some of it off to expose the lettering (MODERN DRYCLEANING) on the hatch. ;D It has a super nice nose, and all the paint appears to be OG. The rockers have the usual rust as does both rear corners. It came with what I was told is a rebuilt 1500 sp engine sitting inside the bus. I really want to clean it up and then go from there. Not sure If I'm gonna make it a driver and keep it, or make it a driver and flip it. I will let you know.

Shane - any interest in the Saskatoon Kombi? There seems to be a consensus that it is eminently savable and worth no more than $1K. Big project though

I would have to see more pictures, me and big projects don't mix for the short term, I just figured it looked decent from what was shown. Lots of stuff going on right now so I'm up in the air about any new vehicles.

Thanks for the pictures Matt. It doesn't look too bad as far as rusty projects go, but then again I may be too brave after seeing so many people attack these things with the funky green on the interweb.

Yeah, I was kinda in the same boat. I see some of the beauty restorations guys pull off on buses that are in waaaaay worse shape than that and it lets you know anything is possible. I really hope someone saves this one before dude hacks it up - it needs a new lease on life.

Had a better look at all the pictures.
February 16th build, only 5 days off from my birthday! 388 m-code - North America Equipment (possibly Canada only) KV - Vancouver Canada destination code 231 - Kombi, LHD RED
Looks like it could be the original engine.
Should need about $7-800 in metal (couple jackpoints, couple outriggers, rockers and passenger side dog leg at least, I think the driver's side rear corner could maybe be saved).
Then there's the hundreds of other little things costing thousands of dollars and many, many hours of my time to fix. Sorry, just trying to talk myself out of it.
By the way his Samba ad is down to $1200.
