I am starting some work on my 60 SC. For the front backing plates do they pass over the inner bearing race or is there something I have to do to get them past? It doesn't look like the ID of the backing plate is larger then the OD of the race? Secondly how is the rear emergency cable held in place by the backing plate (need to take out to remove the plate)? thanks for any help.

emergency cable figured out. Bentley manual doesn't say anything about a retaining hardware to remove. Hard to see when you are digging through 20 years of dirt and grime. Now just the front backing plate to go.....and a stuck treasure chest door (lock turns left and right but door doesn't want to open).

hopefully the thing holding back the backing plate is the inner race for the inner bearing. Will try to pull i off today.

dcuplover, was it just the spacer that was holding the backing plate back? Sorry, I didn't have time to respond to this thread. I hope it all went smoothly after the few bumps.

yes it was. I didn't realize that the spacer was seperate from the spindle. I had cleaned up everything but still couldn't see the part line. When I finally got some good light I could see the difference on the back side better. Pulled off very easy. Now I am looking to do a disc brake set-up in the front. I want to do a drop spindle also but don't know what I want to do in the rear. If I drop the rear do I have to go with a straight axle bug set-up or can i keep the reduction boxes? I have a set of NOS boxes from my panel van that I can swap into the SC.

I've heard you can drop one spline in the rear on reduction boxes and it won't be a problem, plus it should be a decent height if you are only dropping the front via spindles.
