all good bodymen smoke and sand without masks. looking very good chris, fly me out and i'll help you flatten her. what kind of primer are you using? i noticed you filled over the bare metal, i know you had a good reason for that. can you refresh my memory? i started to weld up all the trim holes on my falcon today. bodywork sucks!

I hate this part!!! I'll weld and fabricate panels, spray, wet sand, whatever....but, filler makes me crazy. I really took my time and got the panels very straight during metalwork,so it's just a skim coat. But, it's killing me. Another day in the shop and it's over. At the thickest point on the nose it's only a 1/16th of an inch thick and even that seems too much to me. I grind the areas to be filled with 50 grit for tooth, clean with wax and grease remover and then Extreme Gold directly over. I use Extreme because of the ease of sanding and zinc content. I considered priming and then filling but chose to go over the metal because of recommendations from the Evercoat rep. He says that it's designed to adhere to bare metal and putting it over primer may cause problems in the future. I think either way works. I'm using PPG Global line for everything. It's freakin' expensive!! However, it lays down and sands better than anything I've used. I'm spraying etch prime, 2 high build coats and then a sealer coat of tinted epoxy prime as the final coat before paint. I'm still trying to decide between single stage and base coat/clear coat but bc/cc is in the lead. I really enjoy bodywork....except this part. Chris

yeah ppg is expensive. but in my opinion also the best. i shot my first but in the ppg single stage at it covers very nice. and lays really flat. it should look awesome when its done! are you planning on color sanding when your done?

are you planning on color sanding when your done? I'm actually hoping not to. I'm getting the DC sprayed by a pro and I think he can get it to the point that it only needs a polish. All the edges on a DC don't really lend themselves to wet sanding. We'll have to see how it turns out. All the blocking will be done in my shop and then I'll ship it to him with the final coat of epoxy sprayed but unsanded. We will do a final guide coat and sand together to check for any problems. Just Dave's Hotrods(the same guy that did DP's ghia ) is doing the paint and he's bringing in a friend to help with the spray. There is a lot of area to cover and having two people suited up will be the most efficient way to do it. I think the engine bay and interior will happen first and then they will tape it off and spray the rest in one shot. Now that I think about it, the roof will probably be sprayed with the interior as well. I'm hoping that I can have the rest of the body in primer by the first week of January and then wet sanding will take me about 3 weeks of evenings. If I can have the body back at my shop for February, I should have a fighting chance to have it ready for this summer's shows.... Chris

I can't wait to even be at that stage! Greg, I'll supply accommodations, food, and beer!! I'll feel a whole lot better once the body is in primer. The interior is ready for final sanding and the underside is complete. It just feels like a giant hurdle to get the mudding done. I'll put some more time in tonight and tomorrow. Hopefully by this weekend I can stop obsessing about it. Chris

I do have a certain talent for that don't I??? Actually, I was hoping to stop obsessing about the amount of filler I'm using by this weekend. The chances of me not obsessing about everything else bus related is about as likely as Keith becoming the newest member on VW Vortex. ;D BTW, I finished the passenger side tonight!!! Chris

Chris,
Did you get the welder back yet?
Glad to hear that you finished the passenger side... Bumped into Jonboy tonight... It was good to see him again.

If you are going to have an assembly party, you better flip for who puts the first scratch in the paint job....... Just make it a small one in someplace not easily found.....it'll take away the tension..... cause its going to happen. Ask me how I know..... . Scott

Oh the work is good....the smoking is bad. I will quit!!! I have never put any stock in New Year resolutions, but this has got to be as close as it gets. Primer this weekend!!!!! I ended up grinding the filler off the nose and starting again with some extra metal straightening. It set me back an extra day or two, but after this long, who cares?? I managed to straighten it enough in areas to reduce filling to almost zero. Everybody that stopped by this weekend thought I'd lost it. Some friends, like Doug, knew that I already had! Can't wait to have it all one colour again. Chris

Should I post the "updated" photos? (of course I should...) ;D ..and finally... Cheers buddy! - Doug
