I'm glad that you did! I will update tomorrow. I've just been collecting parts and knowledge to this point. I have to post pics of the things I have so far, but heres a short list:
HP cam, air cleaners and velo stacks from Aircooled research. Also, a very nice bolt on cam gear that has been machined with an outside chamfer and an oil groove. Very cool!
Various bearings and rod components
Stainless steel Abarth exhaust from WOB. Probably the nicest VW exhaust that I've ever seen!
Still waiting on the manifolds to arrive. Maybe this week.
Berg universal linkage. But, back ordered on the sump for a few months.
Lots and lots of cleaning, sorting, and rebuilding. The heads have been sent to K-Roc and I have the crank packed up to ship to DeMello. Thanks to Trevor for helping me out with an uncracked one!
I'll post pics tomorrow!

Very Cool! It's alll coming together. I hope you won't be too awash in trepidation that you are afraid to drive that sucker when it is all buttoned up.

I'm blueprinting the whole build. If I can't build a reliable engine going through all the steps and only using the best parts available then I should pick another hobby....or just stick to bodywork. ;D

I can't wait to see this engine completed & running. What a neat project!

OK, so here are some pics of parts I've collected so far. I still need to get the case machined and the components balanced. I'm hoping that Rick Herity has the time to help me with this. Air cleaners and velocity stacks from Matt Kinney at Aircooled Research. These are from his first batch and the fit and finish is really nice. He even makes the clamps to match stock. Here is the reground cam and custom bolt-on gear from Matt. He chamfers the edge of the gear and machines an oil groove in the teeth to promote oiling and reduce hp robbing friction. I also recieved a new HD oil pump from him. The gears are bigger than stock. Here is the new version of the Berg Linkage. It's just like all Berg stuff, strong, simple, and built to last. They are producing these with a polished center section now and they look great. And all the way from Belgium....The Wolfsburg Specialties version of the classic Abarth exhaust. This is every bit worth the expense. The originals sold for $35.00 in the 50's. I've collected most of the parts, but there are alot of things left on the list. Also, the clearanceing, deck hieght, etc. have yet to be worked out. There isn't a book for this type of build yet and it will be difficult to figure it all out until I can mock up the long block. I guess once the crank and heads are done I can start that process. Chris

The Kombi is still slated to be it's home? Sure is! Kind of like the 56' version of the speed delivery!

My updates are about as slow as my bus, but here it goes...
The case is back from Rimco. They align bored, decked, and full flowed it. Nice clean work too. Fast turn around was a bonus.
I had the cam I bought from Aircooled Research carded for the lift and duration numbers. Measured out at 320 lift and 225 duration at .050 C/L.
The crank is done and on the way. 72mm stroke. Full circle, race balance from Demello Machine. Bob Borzoni is a super guy to deal with and I would recommend them to anyone. It should arrive next week.
The stock rods are being rebuilt right now by Reliable here in Regina with NOS bushings from Ebay.
I haven't talked to K-Roc about the heads in a couple months. I know he's really busy and I'm sure they'll be done soon. Just like everything else with this build, I'm not in a rush.
Porsche OT pulley arrived a few weeks ago. Also an Ebay find. I'll get some pics up when I have time.
Anyway, pretty close to having everything together for the short block. Just need to get all the parts here and balanced. Still need to mic for bearings aswell but I'll be posting all of that as I go.

just shoot Darren an e-mail, he's pretty good about keeping you updated. When he did mine, I got pictures of what the finished product would look like before he started. Then pictures of the heads themselves when he was waiting for a shipment of valves to show up.

Old Speed Update: Just a few cool pics. The first are from Darren. Progress on the porting! Also, got the crank yesterday! What it used to look like...64mm stock stroke: Thanks again Trevor!!!! and now. 72mm full circle, race balance: Now I need to measure everything up and order some bearings. The connecting rods will be ready next week and I can start the mock-up. I'll keep this thread going with all the details. Chris

those heads should flow like crazy for tiny little heads of course. now you know why he kept that crank sitting on his desk so long ;D Its too cool to hide in an engine block. now you just have to figure a way to have an O2 bung for an LM1.

Looking good Chris. I wonder how many times Darren giggled like a school girl when he was porting your heads. ;D You realize he thinks us Sask guys are nuts (you can thank Tood for most of that )

Trevor, I thought about a magneto instead of a dizzy. From what I've read(and I'm full of book knowledge only), it draws a lot of power from a 36hp engine??? Of course, drag engines use them.... Could you shed some more light on them for me?? Why not go for what I'm running, Bosch 010- totally Old School. I took out one spring so I get full advance almost instantly. Here's the spec on my current lump if any interest (old ideas and new): 82 x 90.5mm = 2110cc Domello 82mm crank + 8 dowelled std weight 8 dowell steel flywheel 1700lb kep cover JC 5LB steel crankshaft equalisor pulley 5500" scat forged H beam con rods Engle FK7 camshaft with new gear (288 x 450") Scat 1.25 ratio rocker arms Jonson cam followers 360 degree cam bearing set main & rod bearings ( k/s ) 30mm oil pump with cnc machine full flow pump cover AA forged 90.5 long stroke piston kit with light weight wrist pins & tru arc clips VAG cylinder air deflectors Manton pushrods cro-moly cut to length Scat swivel feet valve adjusters Autocraft shaft kit Magnum 44 sport heads 40 x 35.5 springs shimmed to 1.5" = 235lbs at 0.450" wb inner valve springs new h-duty aluminium case with full flow oil return, case savers, oil galley's drilled & tapped (Autolinea) case oil pressure relief valves incl dual front spring conversion case & pump oil unions cro-moly cylinder stud kit copper head seal rings barrel spacers rocker arm spacers rocker pedestal spacers CB wide mouth windage oil tube set Scat billett oil sump plate balanced crank assembly compression at 8.5 Bosch 010 Dizzy CSP Mega Valve Covers JayCee billett external oil filter 3.5 Quart deep sump Facet electric fuel pump Malpassi Filter King regulator and Guage

Nice set up! Very similar to the engine I'm dreaming about for my DC. However, I think I'll run 78 stroke and an MSD ignition, but with te same compression.
As far as the oldspeed ignition goes, I'm running VW's first mechanical advance distributor(VJR4BR25) and a Judson magneto coil w/CDI. About the same advance as a 010. Doesn't get much more old school than that. ;D
I have some questions about your bus engine. I'll have to PM you.

Come on Chris ya gotta stroke it if ya want a stump puller motor. ;D
Very similar to the 2110 I built for my 61 beetle.
What's the quality like on the aluminum autolinea cases?? Who else is running those? I know Keith has one in his bus, hows that beast running ? I need a new case for Dorinda's phat chic.
What about you're mini k-Roc heads Chris, did they show up yet??
