The metal work almost done.... Compare to the earlier pics... coming along nicely. Just have to finish that last corner.

And Scotty Logue finally makes an appearance on NUTS!! We gotta get that guy a bus!
Looking great Ken. It's good to have a push from a friend every once in a while.
The snow balls are a nice touch (I thought I was the only one that did that). The wheel well came together nicely. At 4-5 spot welds per inch, that's alot of welding!
Did you get the replacement corner from Gerson yet?

I noticed the "funky green panels" and was thinking the same thing. Did shipping cost suck? I've been following a thread on the samba but haven't seen any actual prices to your door in Canada. the crappy thing is I've already picked up replacement corners for my DC. OH THE HORROR! I'm scared to even look close after reading about them. They were the only ones out there when I bought them.

Just going over all the pics from the beginning and "dang" thats a pile of metal to replace. It really looked like a decent bus before stripping the paint off. How many different colors were on it?
I guess my panel would have been a cake walk compared to that......
I have been trying to have the same work attitude as Ken on my project. An hour a day can really make a dent the the pile of things on the to-do list.

She was painted with the nice pink/white combo right over the original paint/rust and tons of bondo. I didn't look too bad from the outside, but I had a chance to really inspect the bus before I bought it, so I had an idea of what I was in for. Obviously it was still more work than I was hoping for. I think at this point I'm getting up to about 200 hours (with a few hours from friends as well). The best part is as soon as I'm done this one, I have another to do that is worse!!!!
The hour a day rule is hard to follow, but worth it if you can. I work as many hours on the weekend as possible. Sundays I useally get 5-8 hours in.

Thanks Colin, I'll be sure to take you up on that one day! Jan 26, Day 129. Metalwork completion. I tell myself that I love metal work...but a project like this really makes me question if I do or not... In a few weeks I will have forgotten all about this work, and I'll be stoked to start on another. Friday morning. A packaged arrived at the shop from Columbia. My long awaited corner. The first one that Gerson (klassicfab) made had some screwy dimensions, and was not fitting right. I mentioned this to him, took some measurements, and he made a new one. Problem was I had already cut the other one off, and had a bus completely missing the left rear corner below the belt-line. Friday 6:05 pm, I started fitting it up, and realized it was way better than the last one. Had it welded and finished before I left for home. Saturday Scotty came by and we finished up the rest of the metal work and stripping that I was going to do before she went out to the body shop. I talked to Freddy and asked him if he could help me to bring it out to Mark's body shop (Mission auto) in Carstairs on Sunday, and he came down that night with his Truck/Trailer, and we loaded the bus on the rotisserie onto his trailer. We had quite a discussion about whether or not this was safe. I was all for it, but Freddy suddenly turned into captain safety. We strapped it down using the largest ratchet straps know to man, and it was fine. At one point I climbed inside and jumped up onto the edge of the sunroof opening, just to test and convince Freddy that nothing would go wrong... I left it on the rotisserie so that Mark could paint the underside easier, and it can make getting at the roof a whole lot easier too. He'll have to take it off when it comes time to paint. We headed out on Sunday morning, dropped her off and picked my other car that he had just finished painting. A 56' oval. My first car. not my first aircooled, this was my first car. I drove it in high school, my friends thought I was nuts... The new corner Finished As stripped as she was going to get in my shop. Me, on top of the rig. I told Fred I would ride up there for the trip if it made him feel better... Seriously... we used 8-5000 lb straps... On the road. I think she liked the trip. And it blew all the dust out of her. At mission. And the car we picked up, my 56 oval. This is the second time he has painted this car for me, the first was 13 years ago. The next updates will be building the suspension, transaxle, etc.. while the body is being worked on.

Good to see the bus heading to the paint stage so early. Did I mention that I hate you Ken. Someday my car will see the inside of the booth.... I just have to stop doing everything else but. Also nice to see that the black oval got a fresh coat again. So when's the sod turning ceremony happening for your musuem out there?

Nice paint on the oval Whats the color for the bus gonna be? I hope my 61' comes out that nice. Mine is due back from the shop at the end of the month. Funny how we hang on to our first cars, Dorinda daily drove her 73' from 85' till 2000 before we tore it down to rebuild. Mark

Mark, I'll let Mark know you like the paint job on the oval. It turned out fantastic. Rosie's color.. well let's just say she's not going to be pink again... ;D He told me it will be ready for pick up in 5 weeks.... I guess you'll just have to wait. Trev, Don't worry. Everybody hates me at first. Then they realize what a nice guy I am ( ), and that I'll let them drive any of my cars that they want. My collection is getting a bit out of hand, but these cars just keep coming to me, like orphan children... and I just can't say no... I keep asking my friends to help me and remind me not to buy any more.. but that hardly ever works. (advice from Mr. Murray himself 2 weeks ago "Ken, don't buy that...ok... maybe... ok... actually you should" )

Thanks again for the update Ken. I was talking to Freddy last night and he mentioned that you loaded the rotisserie onto the trailer with the bus attached. I like the photos of it on the trailer. 5 weeks will dissapear in no time and it'll be back for final assembly. p.s. I've never hated you. ...and I haven't driven any of your cars yet either. .and THIS doesn't count. - DP

I meant hate in the nicest way of course. As in I hate the fact that you make me feel like my projects take way longer than they should (this is reality of course, and I actually thank you for this) If anything you inspire the rest of us to get off our asses and finish our rides. I may have another 23 window for you to take on in the spring. This one involved a V8, and a whole lot of redneck talent from someone. I think in the end it may be a bigger project than Rosie.....how about it, up for another metal working challenge after this one?!

Well, just a small update. No paint on her yet. Mark is working away on her, but he says it will be a few more weeks. No biggie, he does great work, and I know it will be worth the wait. I had ordered my interior a few weeks ago from Lenny at West Coast Classics. Seeing as how this will not be a totally stock resto, I wanted something a little different for the interior. The color scheme caused much agony and debate, but in the end I went back to my first idea, and I'm super happy with how it turned out. Kept a bit of red to go with the name..."Rosie:...remember? These are pics that I was sent of the interior, on the table at WCC.
