This is a technical question from a nOOb like me... BUT..for guys like Witwicki...and maybe Mr. Pippin...
How do you remove the oil gallery plugs (the pressed in ones) prior to tapping the galleries for the oil plug kit.
I have the kit, I have the taps...heck, I even have the motivation.
I just need to know how to get the original plugs out...and I could use a Little More Cowbell!!

Drill a small hole in them then put a screw in the hole and attach a slide hammer to it. A couple good yanks and they should pull free. If you get a stubborn one just heat around the hole with a heat gun to expand the mag.

I'm glad this got brought up. I was planning to use my uni-spotter and slide hammer to get mine out.....however, aluminum plugs. Can't weld to those. I was thinking that they were steel. Guess I'll have to borrow your slide hammer DP. I can't use mine with screws. Chris

Thanks guys.... Problem is... I don't have a slide hammer. I was at princess auto yesterday and saw one for $99.00 - But that's a little bit much to pay for a tool I'll only use for 20 minutes. I have my computer purchase lined up for early next week, so after a day or so of installing and configuring software I should be ready to go with posting pictures with my updates. - DP

Mine is the BFH method. drill hole in the plug, screw a sheet metal screw into it, clamp the vice grips on it, hit the vice grips with the hammer, plug pops out. Some of them were not easy to whack at so I had a piece of angle iron with a small hole that the screw went though and lever them out. You would think I would have made the trip to Princess auto and bought a slide hammer by now Not so glamourous but it works after all eh DP?

I got a complete autobody pulling kit including puller from Princess Auto for less than $20.
Doug if you want to borrow mine I can send it out on the bus for you.

Thanks Shane, I did look into the Boss Tools...and there was also a $4.85 handling charge before tax...and shipping...If I was going to NEED one more than once...I'd get it...but at this point I'll give Mark's suggestion a try... I'm kinda "old-Skool" when it comes to using the BFH method of engine repair. :-) Thanks for the offer Dave, I'll give Mark's method a try first and see how it goes. Will update on CVD when I get a chance. Thanks everyone... - DP

Doug I'm glad you brought this up because now that I just picked up an engine for my bread box and wanted to know how to pull those plugs I don't even need to ask.

I've made some progress with the plugs... I didn't say it was forward progress... I drilled small holes into the aluminum oil-gallery plugs...and I screwed in a screw as tight as I could.... As soon as I brought out the BFH... the screw pulled clean out of the plug..and enlarging the hole. It didn't budge the plug either... I'll give it another try...but it makes me a little worried...I don't want to mess things up after coming this far. - DP

Looks like I might have to swing by there tomorrow, check it out Doug. ;D I saw that in the latest Princess Auto catalog... I told Chris Murray that we should split the cost of the kit...and when I'm done with it...he could keep it for his motor project. Problem is...that was BEFORE I went to town and started pulling plugs with the BFH method. I'm just about finished pulling plugs now so the investment doesn't help me much. I should buy it anyways... Chris has been very generous with the tool lending and the advice. You know...brothers helping brothers. - DP P.S. I read this QUOTE: " I just picked up an engine for my bread box" and I thought.... Hmmm Personal Plate BRD BOX
