Hey Guys I went to visit the Mango today. Put a matching set of "roll around" tires on it and vacuumed it out. I further assessed it's needs and I am optimistic that it won't be a nightmare. I am getting excited about getting it running, driving and stopping! Anyhow, one of the (several thousand)things I need to do is to repair some of the hubcap clips on the rims. I have the clips and rivets, and today finally thought I would try my hand at installation. I did not get very far before I thought I should ask the sage advice of the collective. Is there a special tool to use? Any advice on procedure? I'm sure there are a couple pointers that will keep me from screwing up my wheels. Thanks!

There is a special tool made to help with the rivets. wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=111601000I know I've read on The Samba that some have made their own (apparently not to hard to fab). I haven't had to deal with this yet but will very soon so be sure to post up how it goes. Shane

The tool will make you love life. At least while you are installing hubcap clips. ;D
I just bucked up and bought one after 10 years of installing these stupid things without one, and it's fantastic. Anyone on this forum is welcome to bring their wheels by my shop with the old clips taken off and use the tool and my vise. It will take you all of 5 minutes per wheel .
Some other advise... use the German clips. They dont break off the first time the get bent a bit. They are twice as much money as the brazillian ones, but you won't have to do the job twice. I've got some clips in stock or they are also available form WW.

Keith the way I've installed rivets on wheels is pretty easy and doesn't require special tools. All you really need to do is back the head of the new rivet so you can peen the other side. I cut a carriage bolt to the depth of the rim. With the rim placed on the floor or workbench, face down, the carriage bolt should pinch the new rivet and clip to the rim. You can then peen the back of the rivet with a cold chisel and a hammer.
The original rivets had a cross hatch pattern on them. You can use the chisel first to put the cross hatch in the rivet and then use the hammer to peen it further and tighten it up. It can be a bit of a three handed operation. Basically, you are just crushing the shank of the rivet to fill the hole in the rim.
Hope this makes sense??? and helps,
Chris
EDIT: or you could just go to C1 and use the right tool. Seems alot easier than reading my explanation and trying to figure it out....

Thanks guys
I could not really decipher from the website how that WW tool worked. i think I will opt for the C1 option as a demo for the hubcap clip noob would be in order as well!

Keith,
You are welcome to come by anytime. I'm working on my bus tonight after 4, and probably all day tomorrow (Sunday nov. 5).

A big NUTS thank you to Ken for the lesson on hubcap clip install and the use of the proper tool. That thing is slick!! It really is fit for purpose (and so much larger than it looks in the picture!)

No problem at all. Thank you for the hours of Help!!!! I think this is really the best part of a small community of VW nuts.... Keith comes by; drops off a date matched rim for my 57' bus (I happened to be missing one, thanks again-awesome) I give him a hand with his clips, we work on the bus for a while, chat and exchange some ideas about our projects. Much like "the samba" with one major difference..... real life, not virtual. Don't get me wrong, I like the samba (and nuts for that matter) but i think peolple get so caught up in the internet, they never make it out to the garage...or to their buddies place to actually do something, and not just chat about it..... Karma for Keith.... For the help! Ken

That's so true Ken. It's really easy to fall into just talking about what you're going to do. With a small community around you, and people that are willing to lend a hand, it's easier to keep motivated and get some work done. DP and Shayna helped me build a new storage "tent" this weekend and get all the buses in the compound moved around a stored for the winter. It wasn't the most fun I've had working on VW's, but it sure went fast with some friends to help out!! We now have and additional 500 square feet of covered storage in the back!!!

We now have and additional 500 square feet of covered storage in the back!!! You realize that "If you build it, they will come"? Have you noticed that we always have to have at least one more bus than we have adequate storage for?

My master plan is shot... I contacted the City of Calgary to see if I could build a bigger or just another garage at home.... and there is some stupid rule about not having a garage bigger that your house (sqaure feet)...or more than 1 storey... Maybe underground...... Stupid city-Stupid bylaws. Stupid cars/buses. Ken

I have one of those too.... ( a scooter) it's a 56' NSU Prima. It's fully restored and I keep that im my living room.....no space in the garage. I've actually never driven it. It's 150cc and you need to have a motorcycle license for that, which I've never taken the time to go get. Maybe if I sold it, I could afford one of those car-stacking lifts. I always wanted to put it in the back of a single cab, just for fun. .....I'll go ahead and Hijack this thread and rename it Scooter for sale/lets sign a petition for allowing larger garages in Calgary!
