I say, in order to save as much OG metal as possible... Cut the Worst section off the car (and here's the important part...) AT THE FACTORY SEAMS AND SPOT WELDS... ex: My $0.02 cents.. - Doug p.s. On the subject of non Type-2 Projects... pls check out my Engine Build on CVD in the Ghia section.

Nice project JJ. Looks like we'll be doing front clip replacements at the same time.
The only difference with those clips should be the number of ribs on the plate area. The original being an early 2 rib and the later having 3 (as you know). You should be able to remove the plate area from each and do that swap first. Just like DP said, drill out the spot welds and remove the sections carefully.
Next will be the clip. From the looks of it you'll have to cut the old section out at about half way, maybe less, through the gas tank opening. Measure, measure, measure. You'll need to have as many reference points as possible to fit the replacement section. Also, it would be wise to re-hang the hood so youcan use it as reference along the way.
I'll take some pics of the beetle I'm doing to show you what I mean. You can do it buddy!! Think of it as practice for your first bus....just don't tell Janelle I said that!

Yep, she loves those wheels, they might eventually get transfered to the oval. We will see. I think for now she is thinking just stock wheels.
Rico, How is everything on the island? How are the kids?

Looks nice Jason any rust on the body? it looks pretty clean. I agree with the guys, if you take your time it should be an easy swap. I would probably look at just replacing the two wheel well skins and front apron/spare tire well. Basically drilling out the spot welds(red line) and then cut where there is good straight metal(blue line). fenders and hood will help with alignment when you stitch it back up.

Good to see you guys are getting started on that. I can't offer any advice on body or metal work, but you have some knowledgeable folks on board for that already. My contribution to your project can be, if you decide to upgrade your running gear, a front beam, drum to drum with steering dampener, with 58-64 brakes. I also have a tunnel transaxle out of a 65 Beetle that you are welcome to if you like.

Thanks keith, I actually got the whole brake setup off of my brothers 59 and a tranny from my dad that works great. I think we are set for most of that stuff. All we need is an adjustable beam or dropped spindles.

I'm amazed that rear apron looks that good! Hopefully it still looks that good once the paint is stripped away. You will find that the clip you are installing has the later brake reservoir mount. The 57 and earlier cars used 2 bolts, while the 58 and on used a bolt and a tab to secure. Not a big deal if you are switching out that panel for the earlier one, but if you do end up keeping the panel from the donor clip you will have to keep this in mind. Remember when clipping the front to overlap the joints where necc. in order to keep the strength intact. KCW has some good pics in their galleries to get an idea of what the process involves.

Island life is awesome, and the kids are having a blast. We just went to a river to watch the big boys on their way to their spawning grounds(salmon). Too cool. I caught some beauties this past year. I still got the bus, but just barely. It seems all my VW enthusiasm has since left me. I am hoping to get it back!! You guys look like you are doing well.......

Lookin' good Chris....
Now let's see Janelle's Oval get the same treatment.
Have you test fit the fuel tank? I know you measured 3 times and cut Once...but it's always best to make extra checks.
